I Couldn’t Come Up With a Good Title
Mousetraps freak me out.
Recently we’ve had a mouse issue. That is, we don’t want mice under our sink, and the mice have decided that they don’t care what we want. The weird thing is, we don’t leave food out or anything and the mice haven’t gotten into any of our cupboards where there are food, but they still show up for some reason. So far I’ve caught two mice under the sink. Maybe it’s just the winter weather that’s driven them inside? It’s not like our garage is very sealed off (I mean, over the summer we had a huge yellow jacket hive in the wall – which as of today, is still there) so they could just be coming in from there. But that brings me to my point. I hate setting mousetraps. I don’t know what it is, but I have this unnerving feeling every time I set one. Perhaps I was snapped too many times putting together mousetrap cars for physics in high school?
I’ve come across a couple of new programs that I’ve started using. The first one goes under the "how did I miss this" column: Picasa. I know I’m way late to that party, but I installed it the other day to assist me with printing some custom DVD covers and it fascinated me. I started using it to help sort out the pictures for my digital camera, and I think I’d have a hard time finding something better.
The second piece of software is an instant messaging client called Digsby. It’s not your ordinary messenger – it also integrates with your email and social networks. Right now mine has my AIM, Google Talk, and Jabber accounts signed in. It also checks the email for my Gmail and my own personal domain account. On top of that it checks my Myspace and Facebook accounts, and has an interface for Twitter. All in all, it’s pretty handy, like an internet Swiss Army knife. It is still in development, but it’s very stable so far.
In some of the anime podcasts I listen to, I’ve noticed a trend that I don’t quite agree with. I’ve also noticed this trend in reviews of other media like video games and movies. What I’m talking about is the tendency to dismiss something if it is similar to something that has come before it. A lot of the reviews that I’ve been listening to for anime run something along the lines of "this could have been a good show, but it has elements of other anime shows in it so I think it sucks." It kind of pisses me off, in a way – just because something reuses story or character elements doesn’t mean it’s automatically terrible. If that were the case, every story that was based on something from ancient mythos would be considered terrible. It just drives me crazy to see stuff being summarily dismissed for stupid reasons.
I’m almost done with Professor Layton – I’ve finished all the in-game puzzles (though I couldn’t find all of them without help) and now I’m just about to wrap up the story, about 10 and a half hours in, which isn’t bad at all. After I finish that, I’ll move on to Phantom Hourglass.
Speaking of the DS, why the hell isn’t it compatible with WPA? If anyone has a way of kludging something together to get it to work, please let me know.
I’m covering the after hours help desk for work this weekend. It hasn’t been too bad so far, but it can be annoying sometimes. It feels a little bit like I’m chained to this cell phone.
