Time Management
I know I’ve mentioned before that I have poor time management skills. It’s been bad lately. Days don’t seem to have enough hours in them to accomplish everything I want to do. I have to work the 8 hour work day, of course, but I’d love to get some things done after work. It’s just that there are so many things that I want to do.
It’s not that I’m super addicted to World of Warcraft, but I’d like to get some things accomplished in game. That takes time to do of course, and other than squeezing in an hour or so most of my play time is on the weekend. But if I end up getting drawn into the game, it can fill some of the time that I want to devote to other things.
I have a lot of things that I want to watch and listen to – anime and podcasts. I’ve fallen behind in my podcasts by quite a bit, mostly because I haven’t been walking at night. Anime is yet another story entirely, but I do get some in at times. A lot of it I try to combine – like watching things while I’m playing Warcraft. That doesn’t work if I’m trying to watch something in order to review it.
Writing is probably the thing that suffers the most from my poor time management. I want to write a ton of stuff (three websites take a lot of text to keep updated), but I never leave myself significant time to write anything. When I do try to write, I usually do it at the end of the night and fall asleep instead of getting much done. Either that, or I distract myself too much – I usually need to have something like music or TV or something going in the background and sometimes it takes over the majority of my attention instead of being in the background.
That also doesn’t take into account all the web browsing I do (though I do a lot of it at work anymore). I’m very easily drawn into the web, and I also read a lot of web comics. I had been getting way too many in my comics folder, so I recently had to cut them back – I only read about 50 or so now.
I think I’m going to have to start trying to stick to a schedule – I hate structuring things, but since I can’t seem to do it on my own, maybe an artificial control will help.
