Livejournal
When I step back for a second to take a look at the phases I’ve been through, internet-wise, since I first dialed up, I tend to notice a long path littered with all the sites or programs or people/communities that I’ve abandoned along the way. I mean, our first internet connection was dialup through the MSN Network back in the day. (Incidentally, the Disney offerings at the time were terrific. I was a kid, and they actually had animated puzzles and such. Pretty amazing when I think about it now.) Flamevault is a good example of a site that I put a lot of time and effort into, but I don’t even visit the site anymore. I think I’m probably still a moderator even.
But nothing really comes close to the use that I got out of my Livejournal account. I even had a paid account at a couple of points. I used it as my blog home as well as the place where I kept track of everyone else – the friends page there was the first thing I ever used as an aggregator for all the things I wanted to follow. At the time (when I first started college) a whole ton of my friends were also on there, so it was a perfect community for us to use. However, once I left RIT I began to slack off more on posting, dropping a new entry every once in a while and still keeping an eye on my friends page. More recently I started my three personal sites and stopped blogging at LJ entirely. After I really got into the habit of using an RSS reader (especially now that I use Google Reader) even the friends page lost its utility.
This post will forever serve as my memorial for my Livejournal account – I will miss the good times and the bad (yeah – remember when you posted my super private post for all the world to read? That was terrific). I think I’ll archive the posts somewhere and close the account down.
