Scientific Progress Goes ‘Boink’

The hazardous thing about having an analytical mind is that sometimes I perform experiments on myself. For instance, the only car accident that I’ve been in was when I rear-ended a truck in my old car.  My car was totaled and the truck only had a dent, but that’s not the point. I can’t specifically remember what happened between me noticing the truck stopped ahead of me and me hitting the truck, but I have a strange suspicion that I let up on the brakes, just to see what happened when I hit.  Stuff like that happens to me all the time – usually with disastrous results. That’s part of the reason that I’m accident prone and break things all the time. My brain just never stops before crossing the point of no return, and all for curiosity.

On a lighter note, I got two of my recent frivolous purchases in the mail last week.  One was my new Lenovo Ideapad, which is the Lenovo netbook.  I ordered it mostly because I wanted a new gadget to play with, but I’m sure I’ll come up with a perfect use for it.  The thing is definitely easier to carry around than my full-sized HP or my work laptop. So far it has been perfect for web browsing while watching hockey games or other TV in the living room.  Usually I use my phone, but the netbook is much nicer to use for that.  Battery life is decent – I haven’t stressed it too much.  I’ll probably write a full description/review of it one of these days once I get motivated enough to do it.  One thing’s for sure: I won’t be replacing my big laptop with it any time soon. My HP is way more powerful and easier to type on (I use it to write up all of these blog posts).

The other thing I purchased was the 2009 UK Charles Darwin commemorative coin, straight from the Royal Mint. It’s pretty great, it came in a nice cardboard pamphlet with a bunch of information about Darwin’s history, expeditions, experiments and writings. It’s just the regular coin, not the silver proof one, but it was definitely worth it.

Check out pictures on my Flickr page, the computers are in the Computers set and the coin is here.
