Tidbits

There is a streetlight on the road uphill from my apartment that only stays lit for a few seconds at a time.  Recently I’ve been walking about a mile and a half around my neighborhood at around 10:00 PM every night, and lately the moon has been waning and it’s quite dark out at night.  The end result of this combination is that at the top of the hill I have to walk in nearly complete darkness for a decent stretch of highway.  Mostly it’s just creepy, but I’ve had deer at least run across the street very close to me.  Deer are pretty spooky up close in the dark sometimes.

Along the same tack, during the aforementioned walks around the neighborhood I’ve been listening to a full cast radio drama of the Chronicles of Narnia.  I’ve really enjoyed these books for most of my life, but this last time through it there was something that bugged me.  The way Lewis wrote his female characters grated on me the whole time.  It may just be a function of the time I live in or the fact that the women in my close family group are very independent, but I had a hard time with the story every time things like ‘you men take up your swords and the women get behind us’ were spouted.  I don’t claim to be the perfect person or anything, and I do have some qualities that I’m sure would get me into trouble with those who take a hard line to equality.  However, the secondary status the female characters are afforded in the Narnia books is a problem for me, and it is going to affect the way I think about the series in the future.

On one hand, I’m sad that I can’t think of the books in the same light that I have in the past.  On the other hand, I’m extremely glad that I do have enough of a perspective on the situation to think this way.  I’m not even going to get into the religious aspects of the books in the light of my earlier shift in thinking.

Writing has been going well, though I’ve barely made any headway into my fiction ventures.  Weekends have been busy though, and next weekend won’t be any different.  Maybe after that I can get some stuff done.
