Certifications
I’ve been thinking a lot about technical certifications. Recently I got my certification in ITIL v2 Foundations (paid for by the company I work for) and that’s what started me on this path. I always saw certifications as a way for people to pretend that they were more competent than they truly were. (Incidentally, this stems from my general dislike for structured learning and the fact that most tests are really easy for me.) However, the reality in my line of work is that certifications can be seen (by management, at least) as a commitment to proving one’s abilities. To that end, I’ve decided that I’m going to pursue some of the Microsoft certifications.
MCSE always seems to be a popular one among people in my field (I’m a PC tech), but I think I’m going to go outside the box and pick up any of the .NET ones that I can manage. My job is mostly repairing PCs and other projects and things that go along with that, but I’ve managed to add a lot of programming to it, since I’ve done a lot of it in the past. I really enjoy the programming I’ve done since I started on these database and scripting projects, so I’d like to do as much as I can to further that path.
I would also like to take some more UNIX training, along with maybe the IBM products we use at my company (like Tivoli). I’m at least definitely interested in continuing in the ITIL certifications, as there are several more levels, along with a v3.
